Immigration in Berlin

According to statistics in Berlin, Germany's capital city, now one out of five employees within the city has an immigrant background. This is an interesting look at the changing demographics of a city that once divided the world between western democracy and Russian communism.

East Berlin was once relatively closed off from the outside world, only interacting with other areas under Soviet influence. I found it interesting that since the collapse of the Soviet Union and reunification of Germany, relatively recent events, Berlin has managed to achieve such a high level of diversity. This really shows that politically, Germany is open to immigrants and welcomes diversity within its borders. Social problems may still be present in Germany, but as long as Germany remains open to immigrants, I feel that the situation will improve.

Europe is beginning to grow more friendly to immigration. Studies and articles like this, which paint immigration in a positive light and compliment diversity, show that diversity and immigration are increasingly welcome in Europe.
